POP! WENT THE TIMELINE
Sometimes I create work and that theme or topic comes back around. I created this video animation of Diane Abbott in 2020, and four years later, it is (sadly) still as relevant now as it was then.
PODCAST OF THE WEEK
I listened to an episode of 'This American Life' called The Question Trap,' which delved into why people ask loaded questions that hint at deeper issues. One segment that struck me was the discussion on the significance of asking someone about their opinion on Beyoncé (especially in dating scenarios). This question acts as a litmus test. For example, enquiring about Beyoncé may reveal how the person feels about (powerful) Black women. Their response can indicate whether they admire, respect, or devalue them. Listen here and see what you think.
I think we could argue that how people perceive successful Black women like Beyoncé and Diane Abbott really speaks volumes. It certainly raises questions about the broader perceptions of Black women in society. Are they truly seen as equals, or are they unfairly judged and held to higher standards? If Beyoncé and Diane face misogynoir wrapped in criticism and scrutiny, just imagine the experiences of Black women who lack the protective shield of wealth, power or status.
COVER OF THE WEEK
I adored this cover of 'Hey Ya!' by a singer called Tonnie. Her voice is beautiful and her version adds a sweet melancholy that perfectly complements the lyrics. Have a listen:
